You've been leading all along (and didn't even know it)

Hello Reader,

The Leadership You Don’t See Coming

Have you ever felt like leadership is something that happens “over there” in the C-suite or behind closed doors? What if I told you that you’ve been leading all along – you just didn’t see it?

Klaus Grim and Gillian Faith talk about this simple idea of silent leadership. Klaus, Emergency Medicine PA and coach with Transforming Healthcare Coaching®, spent years laughing off any suggestion that he was a leader. “I’m just a practicing clinician on the floor,” he’d say. But through coaching and deep reflection, he discovered something profound: silent leadership is everywhere in healthcare.

What Silent Leadership Actually Looks Like

Silent leadership isn’t about titles or corner offices. It’s the nurse who takes initiative during a system crash, writing patient names on labels when the EMR goes down. It’s the team member who steps up during a crisis without being asked. It’s you, communicating with worried families, making quick decisions when seconds matter, and guiding colleagues through difficult situations.

The Power of Leading Without Recognition

Here’s what’s beautiful about silent leadership: it comes from authentic care and responsibility, not the need for recognition. As Klaus puts it, “You’re not acting for recognition. You’re doing it because you authentically, truly care about what you’re doing.”

Think about the people you work with who embody these qualities: - They bring positive energy, even when the waiting room is packed - They’re constantly doing something to improve patient care - They listen when you need help - They work on solutions instead of complaining about problems - They’re the ones you count on during the tough shifts.

Building Confidence in Your Leadership

If this resonates with you, but you struggle with confidence, remember that everything starts with awareness. You’re already leading – now it’s about stepping out of the silence if you choose to.

Consider these reflection questions: - How much does leadership resonate with you? - What leadership moments can you speak to with confidence? - How do others see you showing up at work?

Moving Forward

Whether you want to pursue a formal leadership role or simply embrace the leader you already are, the foundation is the same: authentic care, positive energy, and the willingness to act when it matters most.

Your leadership doesn’t need a title to make a difference. It already is.

What's inspiring us this week:

The world is filled with mixed emotions this week as we watch with disbelief what is happening in the Middle East.

Grateful for the words of my hot power yoga instructor today reminding us: "Strength and softness are not in opposition. They are partners." How can we find strength and softness today?

The Practice: Celebrating Wins

We get more of what we focus on. The practice of gratitude and celebrating the goodness of life is the first step in changing our brains, mindsets, and circumstances for the better.

Spending time with friends, doing the mundane things in life: walking the dog, cleaning the house, relaxing with my daughter. The simple things of everyday life are to be savored, not to be taken for granted.

Stay mindful and keep leading,

lillian emlet klaus grim 100 episodes podcast

Hello Reader, A few years ago, if you met me right after the pandemic was loosening its grip on the world, I was not a podcaster. I definitely knew I was a critical care physician who happened to have some ideas about coaching, because I just finished coach training. And Klaus really wasn’t sure either. And yet, here we are at episode 100! I’ll be honest - back then, I’d never really used YouTube aside from random tutorials on how to fix something around the house. The thought of being on...

podcasthon 2026 transforming healthcare coaching episode Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation interview CEO J. Corey Feist

Hello Reader, When Lorna Breen died by suicide in 2020, her brother-in-law Corey Feist made a choice that changed federal policy. He listened. Not to consultants. Not to a board room. To the healthcare workers themselves — nurses, physicians, pharmacists, PAs — who flooded his inbox after national coverage of Lorna's passing. People who were scared. People who were watching their own children enter a profession and wondering if it was safe. What Corey heard became the architecture of the Dr....
